‘Food Security in Bronze Age Ireland’ by Dr Kerri Cleary
What can archaeology tell us about food in the prehistoric past, and how did people manage the challenges of achieving food security? The FOODSEC project explores these questions using a multi-strand approach to document the evidence for food remains and food storage facilities during the Bronze Age period. The findings, including those from experimental archaeology, reveal how people addressed food challenges and managed resources effectively, shedding light on their dietary practices and strategies for sustaining their communities.
Dr Kerri Cleary was recently appointed Lecturer in Archaeology (Western European Prehistory) at UCC. Her research interests are in Neolithic and Bronze Age settlement and subsistence practices, as well as ceremonial and funerary rituals. She has worked in archaeology for nearly 20 years, across both the public and private sectors, and has published widely as an author and editor.

‘Myths of Irish Broadcasting: The Story of Irish Broadcasting’ by Dr Roddy Flynn
Have you ever wondered if the reference to ‘comely maidens dancing at the crossroads’ was indeed a true quote of Éamon de Valera in his St Patrick’s Day broadcast in 1943. Come along to our next lecture, which marks 100 years of Irish broadcasting, where you may find out.
Dr Roddy Flynn is a researcher and lecturer in the DCU School of Communications. His research interests are diverse and span the social history of communication, political economy of the media, telecommunication and broadcasting policy, and the history of media technology. In recent years a major focus of his research has been on questions of media ownership and media concentration. He was part of a vast international study, the results of which are due to be published later this year in a book called ‘Who Owns the World’s Media’. He wrote the Irish chapter, which covers all Irish media sectors: print, broadcast, online, search engines, book publishing, magazines, telecommunications, television distribution and etc. He also co-authored with John Horgan ‘Irish Media: A Critical History in 2017’.

The legend of Naomh Ciarán of Cape Clear claims that he brought Christianity to Ireland before St Patrick, earning him the title of ‘Ireland’s First Saint’. But, who was he and is this title justified? This lecture by local historian, William Casey, will examine what we know about the life of Naomh Ciarán and what his role in the early Irish Church might have been.
